We were on our way to Las Vegas last Friday to attend Affiliate Summit, CES and WordCamp. While placing our bags in the bins to go through the X-ray machines at security, we couldn’t help but re-notice that Zappos ads were still everywhere. Zappos is headquartered in Las Vegas and some of our Social Media buddies were on their way to a tour of Zappos as we traveled. How appropo!

Zappos has had a series of colorful ads in airports across the country for awhile now. This is not new news. Great sites like Adrants have been writing about them for almost a year. However, the ads still amaze me each time I see them because they are so creative and brilliantly placed. The audience is captive while waiting in the security line and there is absolutely nothing else to do. They are bright vibrant blues and oranges and virtually impossible to miss.
The ads are fun and punchy:

“HOORAY!, You wore your good socks today! ZAPPOS.COM”

“Place shoes here..Buy shoes here” (with an arrow pointing to ZAPPOS.COM)

“Place laptop here, Buy a bag for it at ZAPPOS.COM”

I first heard of Zappos.com years ago when a shoe fanatic friend talked of weekly online shoe buying sprees. However, I really became familiar with Zappos.com because of their social media presence. Zappos has made a name for themselves by using a great social media strategy.

If you google Zappos, you’ll find lots of articles talking about CEO Tony Hsieh and his social media presence. You can see by this example of airport Ads, that Zappos combines both traditional and social media to have a unique marketing approach that does a great job at reaching the masses. We heard from people taking tours of Zappos all week that the energy at their headquarters is amazingly high, fun and inspiring. We also read an article that Zappos pays employees to QUIT!

Kudos to You Zappos! and thanks for entertaining us in the Airport. Afterall, doesn’t everyone need a few laughs while waiting in the sometimes long and laborious security lines at the airport?

Zappos is a great case study in Social Media Strategy. Read everything you can about them and soak it up like a sponge. I have a feeling we are just seeing the beginning of the greatness of Zappos.

You can also follow them on Twitter @zappos.
