Angie,

Instant money and massive followings have been and always will be the trumpeted message of affiliate marketers et. al. You know better. I'm sure you see the truth in your own click-through stats and activity online. There are VERY few people who can make a quick buck on Twitter - and even if they do, they're riding a "thin value" wave that will end - none of them are building sustainable businesses. Twitter is a listening and conversation tool first - it's for presence management and engagement. Without reputation, a trusted network of true fans and the promise of consistent added value, you're not going to make anything more than coffee money. Making mortgage money, however, can only be done quickly by people and organizations that have established reputations and strong, loyal customer bases who are seeking them out and using the tools to engage the organization and spread the word about their (positive) experiences. Old world rules of networking and relationship building still apply, even though the medium is different. People who are using tools like Hummingbird to boost their followings to astronomical levels are only building "thin" value that isn't sustainable. The tools are constantly changing, and if your reputation doesn't port across mediums, you're not approaching being online the right way.

I hope this doesn’t overlap much with what’s already been said but I’ve been compiling data on the different techniques for the past few weeks and thought I’d share… I put everything up here: http://themetricsystem.rjmetrics.com/2009/07/21/how-to-get-twitter-followers-the-definitive-guide/
