Gain 1.1 Million Twitter Followers Here! Tonight! Make Millions!

by Angie A. Swartz on July 10, 2009

The promise of massive Twitter followers and instant money making opportunities seem to be what’s promised almost everywhere I look.  But the surprising thing to me is that if so many people are offering these things, then many people must be interested.  The thing that concerns me the most about this new phenomenon is that I’ve recently seen some of my friends/colleagues (new to twitter) retweeting what they see as innocent offers to gain twitter followers.  Last week, I tweeted the following and had several folks respond and retweet wondering about the same thing:

“Did I miss something about the cultural acceptance of gaining followers organically? Is that now OUT?

Now, granted, there are no rules on twitter and that is one of the great things about the twitter community.  You can use it as you like and unfollow anyone whose conduct isn’t in line with your ethical preference.  However, it’s important to understand the opportunities that exist in a community like twitter.

As someone with a small voice in social media via my show on Twitter Talk Radio and three blogs, I always feel obligated to play a role in the development in the continued maturation of the twitter ecosphere. I’ll be talking about How to Use Twitter to Grow our Business on Online Marketing with RSS Ray Wednesday July 15 at 1pm EST.  I’ve also written a blogpost, Twitter Followers: The Fast and The Furious or The Steadfast? on RSS Ray’s site for your reading pleasure.  Enjoy…that is if you can take time out from your quest for followers 😉

(Note at 12:29pm 7/10/09 RSSRay’s blog appears to be compromised so we’ve taken out our blogpost link for your protection until their able to resolve their virus attack.  We’ll have it back in as soon as they tell us they’re safe.)

I hope this doesn’t overlap much with what’s already been said but I’ve been compiling data on the different techniques for the past few weeks and thought I’d share… I put everything up here:

Instant money and massive followings have been and always will be the trumpeted message of affiliate marketers et. al. You know better. I’m sure you see the truth in your own click-through stats and activity online. There are VERY few people who can make a quick buck on Twitter – and even if they do, they’re riding a “thin value” wave that will end – none of them are building sustainable businesses. Twitter is a listening and conversation tool first – it’s for presence management and engagement. Without reputation, a trusted network of true fans and the promise of consistent added value, you’re not going to make anything more than coffee money. Making mortgage money, however, can only be done quickly by people and organizations that have established reputations and strong, loyal customer bases who are seeking them out and using the tools to engage the organization and spread the word about their (positive) experiences. Old world rules of networking and relationship building still apply, even though the medium is different. People who are using tools like Hummingbird to boost their followings to astronomical levels are only building “thin” value that isn’t sustainable. The tools are constantly changing, and if your reputation doesn’t port across mediums, you’re not approaching being online the right way.
