Angie Swartz and Jessica Crawford chat with Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Ken Peterson about their extensive, collaborated Social Media Strategy. Monterey Bay Aquarium has a devoted social media staff of 4+ and is much larger facility. Ken discusses the Aquarium’s two missions: To educate and inform about 1) ocean wildlife and climate change (animal info, acidification, rising seas, temps, etc) and 2) the seafood watch program (the way seafood are caught, what to eat/not to eat, etc). They discuss the use of three twitter accounts to promote these causes (@MontereyAq, @aquaken & @seafoodwatch). We also discuss the Aquarium’s early approach to social media, their iPhone application, and the Aquarium’s upcoming exhibit, “Hot Pink Flamingos-Stories of Hope in a Changing Sea”.
Angie Swartz, Jessica Crawford and Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Ken Peterson discuss how Monterey Bay’s social media success has grown exponentially as a result of coordinating their blog, twitter, video & flickr activities. They have 2 facebook fan pages (http://www.facebook.com/montereybayaquarium and http://www.facebook.com/seafoodwatch ) and one profile page for seahorse Herbie Hippo Campus who you can friend. We discuss how they have seen success with videos, some being viewed over 200,000 times. We also discuss some other local activities that have been fruitful for them and how the fans really are the heart of everything.
Angie Swartz and Jessica Crawford wrap up discussing how Jessica supports other non profit organizations and learns from them via social media. She retweets and reads their blogs.
