The WORST thing is when people try marketing to you via Direct Message on Twitter and tell you to check out their site/product. I really don't mind if it's a cool blog or site that might be of interest, but it's almost NEVER that. Most of the time, however, they post links to get rich quick or MLM schemes. That would be the fastest way to get me to unfollow you. They just don't "get it!"

It doesn't say in Seth Godins Blog post that Mother Theresa was an Atheist, it says that she was filled with self doubt. An Atheist is someone who DOESN'T beleive in God and renounces the existence of God, the devil, the whole shebang. She was struggling with the idea and was far more Agnostic because she was searching for God and she wanted to believe. Atheists don't seek God they reject and renounce because they don't believe.

Good post! I get the feeling a lot of the folks who follow me on Twitter are doing it just because they want to sell at me or get me to read what they write. It's a little insulting -- it's like they view us as drones who will react to any attention by buying their crap. My attention is not as cheap as a "follow" or a "friending."

This mode of socialization is not how most of us were trained to think regarding business and work. The social graces it takes to be authentic are not rare, just misapplied. It took me awhile.... and I am still learning how to engage without a trace of shill.
