I've been using Linkedin for a couple of years now, but I use it a little differently than most.

I market to C level executives. When business is slow, I do a search for "CEO" or "CFO" that are within 20 miles of me. I sort the search be degrees away from me.

I then look at the second level individuals that come up. The first levels are people that I know. The second levels are the people that my contacts know. If there is anyone on this list that I want to meet, I pick up the phone and personally call my contact and ask if he or she would be willing to set up a coffee or lunch.

For this reason, I rarely connect to people that I haven't personally met, and once a year or so I go through my list and disconnect people that I don't remember.

I know that this is a little different, but it works for me. It's kind of high tech meets high touch.

You've only just begun to scratch the surface of what's possible with LinkedIn.

I've been doing LinkedIn Training for a couple of years now and people are amazed at what they can really do with LinkedIn.

But it's not passive.

You've got to build the network and then WORK the network.

Great post!

Alan, you've shared some great information for businesses to use LinkedIn. I've personally been on LinkedIn for several years. I realize the value of having a strong network and LinkedIn is a great way to expand and target your network. If you are a professional in business and you're not on LinkedIn you are missing a wonderful opportunity to meet like minded people as well as network with other professionals. You can search for products and services, employment opportunities, search out thought leaders and provide and receive recommendations. Connecting is the key to Referrals and business success. LinkedIn is the vehicle.

I personally use LinkedIn on a regular basis. I feel it is necessary to visit frequently and review the profiles and updates of my connections. I join groups related to my industry and participate in discussions. This is important in establishing yourself as a thought leader in your field of expertise. As I work with my clients in developing their social media strategy I always start with training them on how to use LinkedIn successfully to build a strong network.
